As the seed of the mighty oak tree, acorns have been adopted in many cultures and religions as a symbol of good luck, prosperity, potential, independence and growth, among other things. They also have protective qualities: an acorn on a windowsill is thought to guard against lightning strikes (in Norse mythology the god Thor sheltered from a thunderstorm beneath an oak tree), and when carried on a person an acorn becomes a charm to ward off the ‘evil eye’.
The English proverb ‘Great oaks from little acorns grow’ reminds us of the huge potential in humble beginnings, and we at PSL are proud to present ‘Acorn’ as our first artist’s commission, right at the beginning of this particular journey.
