Born in 1901 of a philanthropist’s ' dream to bring great art to the people of London, access to the arts has been a cornerstone of the Whitechapel Gallery’s policy and practice. Through its internationally acclaimed programme of exhibitions, public events, courses and projects the Whitechapel Gallery continues to extend social, physical and cultural access to contemporary and modern art As an educational charity the Gallery receives 40% of its annual operating budget from Arts Council, England and relies upon the generosity of supporters to present its programmes.
The Gallery has premiered international artists such as Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Nan Goldin, and provided a showcase for Britain’s most significant artists from Gilbert & George to Lucian Freud, Peter Doig and Mark Wallinger.
The Whitechapel Gallery also supports emerging artists through peer critiques and open portfolio sessions, developing the next generation of artists, today. The East End Academy is an open submission exhibition showcasing the work of emerging and established artists from East London that takes place every three years. First held in 1932, the latest edition is devoted to painting and will run from 9 July to 20 September 2009.
The Whitechapel Gallery is currently entering an exciting new phase in its 100-year history; an ambitious £13 million expansion due to open in Spring 2009 which will almost double its size. The Gallery plays a unique role in the capital’s cultural landscape and is pivotal to the continued growth of East London as the world’s most vibrant contemporary art quarter.
