Exchange is a new work by Pippa Hale, commissioned by PSL [Project Space Leeds]. It provides a platform for visitors to exchange meaningful objects and works of art with each other.
Hale’s design resembles a table or cabinet. Made of plywood, it incorporates surfaces that slide back to reveal a number of coloured cube-shaped recesses in which visitors to PSL can swap art works, trinkets, much-loved books or beautiful found objects – things they value but would like to pass on.
If you would like to take part, bring your objects to PSL during opening hours Wed-Sat 12-5pm.
About Exchange
Pippa Hale’s design incorporates architectural as well as design principles, occupying and exploring grey areas – is it furniture or is it an artwork? Is it decorative or functional? The artist is interested in sculptural objects that combine aspects of design and have a functional facility.
Inspiration for the work came from Hale’s fascination with the way merchandise is displayed in gallery shops, and the resulting piece is designed around a cubic shape measuring 200mmx200mmx200mm.
The work could be described as a metaphor for the way people like to organise things, classify things, put them in boxes. It ventures into territories of obsession yet contradictorily implies a loss of control through the way in which it will be used: to display random objects placed in and on it by random passers by. This will create a piece of work that is constantly changing in an unpredictable way and offers anyone who wishes to an opportunity to take part. [JG]
